In 1859, as America teeters on the brink of disaster, a young man from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania starts classes at the nearby Dickinson College but would never graduate. In 1863, a second lieutenant in the Union Army is captured and sent to the infamous Libby Prison. In 1868, a student from McCormick Theological seminary is denied ordainment as a Presbyterian minister. In 1886, a Unitarian minister begins his missionary work in Japan that would become the focus of his life's work. Surprisingly, all of these events are related. Each of these stories are chapters in the largely forgotten life of Clay MacCauley (1843-1925). The purpose of this website is to represent MacCauley's eventful life and to provide a basis for the future study of his life by students and biographers. Under "The Life", there are descriptions on important chapters in Clay MacCauley's life. Under "Interact", there is a map detailing MacCauley's life geographically and chronologically, and an image gallery. Under "Continue the Story", there is a guide for biographers and suggestions for further reading on Clay MacCauley. Life took Clay MacCauley to many unexpected places, but his outspoken, curious, and faith driven nature lead him to perservere through his trials and triumphs.
